How I Prevent Blisters When Running

I ‘ve been gifted with toes that seem to overlap a little. This wonderful gift is particularly noticeable on my little toe with must be a little shy as it’s always hiding a little behind it’s older brother next to it and won’t look me in the eye, yes the toenail points sidewards! It’s ugly and needs no further explanation.

Blisters love my growing on my feet.

Now, over the man miles of running I have developed a few techniques to help me avoid blisters. I still get the odd one but in general it’s must less of a problem that it used to be.

So how do I work this magic?

Use Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline)

First thing I do is take a few scoops of Vaseline or other petroleum jelly and wipe it between every toe and on the sides of my feet. I’ll also put a little around the ankle areas on longer runs. This really helps stopping any friction between the toes.

Wear seamless running socks

Running socks made a big difference to my running and although expensive can last literally for years. In fact I only recently developed a hole in my first every pair of Hilly Monoskin. They lasted thousands of miles but were finally slaied by volcanic rock dust after hours of  hiking up and down up Mount Taranaki in New Zealand.

As I mentioned I recommend Hilly Monoskins. You can read more about my thoughts on running shocks here: Running Socks, Are They Needed?

Wear shoes not too loose and not too tight

I tie my running shoes firmly but not too tight. Too tight can cause pinching and too loose excessive rubbing so I think you have to find the happy medium here.

Wear shoes in before going for longer runs

I find. It also pays to run in new shoes slowly. Basically keep your old shoes for a while and only run shorter distances in the new shoes.

And that’s really it! My feel stay pretty much blister free with these tips.

How do you stay blister freee?

You can pick up Vaseline really cheap and get great prices on Hilly Monoskin socks at Amazon. Below are our affiliate links:

When I can be I am a regular runner but I am also nothing special and certainly no elite, so in that respect I am regular too. However I do love talking about running and related things and I do have a lot of experience, over 15 years now.
