I made a mistake this morning. I woke and thought! I considered my run. Now contrary to popular opinion I don’t believe it’s always right to think about everything.

I will run today, however a few hours later than I intended. I even have my running gear on. I attempted to do my run after the thought process kicked in and all the worries of what I had to do today kicked in. I thought, i’ll just do this first, then that and then that…. Before I knew it I was deep in work.

My early morning runs work best when I wake up, put on my gear and head out the door before my brain has a chance to question what is happening, how the weather will be, what kind of time I will run and even sometimes where I will run too.

You just have to get up and do it.

The same goes for any form of exercise, especially when it comes to early mornings.

How can you go for a run without thinking about it?

Establishing your morning run as a routine thing will make it easier and taking nightly steps to eliminate the chance for morning thought is essential.

Layout your running gear, fill up your water and have everything ready to go the night before. This should only take a few minutes. I just fold my gear in a little pile with the iPhone, belt and headphones on top. This morning that wasn’t the case!

Leave a small apple or a piece of easily digested food and a glass of water ready to quickly consume on wake.

Make sure you hydrate the night before.

Tell others in your household that you will be running first thing in the morning, having it in your head and theres will make it more of a reaction rather than a process to think through. If you don’t go people start saying “oh you went running early” or “did you go for your run?”. If it becomes routine for everyone there is no way out!

Once you are out running your brain will start to wake up. You may find your shoes are on the wrong feet, you a running in your underwear and you don’t know where you are but what the hell, at least you are out and making yourself a better person!

Do you have any tips or stories to share.

Good luck, now stop reading and go run.

When I can be I am a regular runner but I am also nothing special and certainly no elite, so in that respect I am regular too. However I do love talking about running and related things and I do have a lot of experience, over 15 years now.

Awesome stuff Shelly. I have been going some pretty long distances so it’s been really hard to coax myself out the door. However the earlier I do it the better I feel when it’s done!

Good luck and keep at it!
