I t’s Sunday evening and I have not run since Thursday. Normally I would be itching for a run and feeling a little depressed that I hadn’t laced up for a few days. However today I rested and I fell just fine about it.

My itchiness to run today was quelled by the fact that the days since I last ran have not been empty of exercise. I diversified and did other things, something that I feel everyone should be doing both for the good of their body and so that they don’t get bored with running.

Diversity is the Spice of Life

My calves are killing me and my right arm is a little achy.

On Friday evening I played squash for the first time, it was a lot of fun and i’ll certainly be trying to play a little more. Being the slow plodder of a runner I am the lack of my fast twitch muscle fibers and upper body usage meant that I found it hard to say the least. My lungs burned and my arm strength didn’t hold up for the full hour and on top of all that I twisted an ankle. I also lost every game I played!

On Saturday I went to North Wales, UK and got a train to the top of their highest mountain, Mount Snowdon. It’s not so big but big enough for a rocky twisty, turny and very slow 4.5 mile decent with some of my family. It didn’t really hurt much yesterday but today I hobbled around like an old man, I guess I should have done some Yoga stretches before bed last night! All these aches and pains from these activities show that my regular running isn’t hitting certain parts of the body and areas of fitness. The diversity is obviously doing me some good and I am sure will eventually help to improve my running by giving me a better overall fitness and ability to handle different running situations that may crop up.

It also means I am not even slightly cringing at the idea of my planned run for tomorrow. If I had run for the last few days I would possibly be feeling a bit bored of the planned route (yeah I know that can be changed) and would maybe be looking for an excuse not to run again for a few more days. The diversification of activity makes it easier to keep very reglar exercise as part of your lifestyle.

I plan and I think you should plan to try and add in some other types of exercise to keep things fresh and improve overall fitness.

When I can be I am a regular runner but I am also nothing special and certainly no elite, so in that respect I am regular too. However I do love talking about running and related things and I do have a lot of experience, over 15 years now.

    That looks like an awesome trip, lots of great views. There is nothing I enjoy more than hiking from vista to vista in the mountains.

      It was awesome David. I have actually hiked up and down this mountain many times in my life and would recommend it to anyone who is nearby.

    Falling into the trap of always exercising the same way is easy. It’s hard to develop a balanced approach that way, though. Thanks for the reminder that we need to vary our routine!
